Why Every Field Needs a Keeper (And How We’re Helping You Get Started)

Secret Garden Bees

If you've spent any time at our farm, you know we're a little "bee-obsessed." But there's a serious reason behind the buzz. Bees are the silent engines of our food system, pollinating about one-third of every bite we eat. From the blueberries at our partner farms to the clover in our own 22-acre "secret garden," none of it happens without our winged workers.

But here's the reality: bees are facing a tough road with habitat loss and environmental changes. The world doesn't just need more bees; it needs more beekeepers.

The Power of the Local Beekeeper

When a neighbor decides to keep a hive or two in their backyard, they aren't just making honey. They are:

  • Boosting Local Gardens: Your vegetables and flowers will be more vibrant than ever.
  • Supporting Biodiversity: More pollinators mean more varieties of plants can thrive.
  • Creating Food Security: By strengthening local pollination, we make our local food supply more resilient.

Our Mission: Mentoring the Next Generation

We know that starting a hive can feel a little intimidating. You've got equipment to buy, "bee-speak" to learn, and—let's be honest—the fear of a few stings.

At Secret Garden Bees, we don't want anyone to feel like they're flying solo. Our founder, Jim Hartman, discovered the therapeutic power of beekeeping after his time in the Army, and he's made it his mission to pass that knowledge along.

What we're doing to "mentor up":

  1. Hands-On Guidance: We love talking shop. Whether you're a hobbyist with one hive or a farmer looking to diversify, we're here to answer the "Why is my queen doing that?" questions.
  2. Sharing Organic Practices: We're committed to raising our bees as naturally as possible, and we teach our mentees how to manage pests and health without relying on harsh chemicals.
  3. The "Farm Partner" Network: We collaborate with local growers to showcase the beautiful harmony between bees and agriculture. It's a living, breathing classroom where you can see firsthand how our hives bring life to the fields through natural crop pollination.

Mentorship starts with a spark—and usually a taste of what's possible!

Why It's Never Too Late to Start

Whether you're a fellow veteran looking for a peaceful new hobby, a student curious about nature, or a family wanting a project that gives back, there is a place for you in the beekeeping community.

You don't need 22 acres like we have in Linden. You just need a little bit of space, a lot of curiosity, and a willingness to learn.

The Spectrum of Success

One of the first lessons we teach our new beekeepers is to appreciate the variety. Just like the honey in our bottles ranges from light clover to dark wildflower, every beekeeping journey is unique.

We want to see a hive in every neighborhood and a beekeeper in every community. Because when we help the bees, we're really helping each other.

Are you thinking about getting your first hive this spring? Drop by the farm or send us a message—we'd love to help you get your "bee legs" and start your own secret garden!
