The Story Behind the Hive

Deep In the Wild Blooms

Tucked away from the rush of the road, hidden behind a tall, green curtain of pines, you’ll find the quiet corner of the world that gave us our name: Secret Garden Bees. Here, we’ve traded the ticking clock for a slower rhythm, where our days are measured by the sparkle of morning dew and the steady, evening hum of the crickets.

As a veteran-owned family farm, we’ve stepped out of our uniforms and into beekeeping suits, but that same sense of duty remains. We don’t just "keep" bees; we live alongside them as neighbors and stewards.

On our farm, we let the North Carolina sun and the wild, rolling blooms do the heavy lifting, while we provide the steady hands and watchful care the girls need to thrive. Every jar we fill is a tribute to that partnership—a little piece of our hidden sanctuary, harvested with heart and a deep respect for the land.

How Our Bees Forage

Our bees are the busiest neighbors in the county! They spend their days dancing between the wild meadow blooms, the old-growth clover, and the fruit trees that line our fields. Because we refuse to over-filter or blend our honey, every jar becomes a golden time capsule of a specific season in Linden.

When you twist the cap on a jar of Secret Garden Bees honey, you aren’t just getting a sweetener—you’re tasting the hard-earned harvest of a family that believes in doing things the right way, not the fast way. We take our role as stewards of this land seriously, working to ensure our soil stays rich and our pollinators stay strong for the next generation to follow.

Stewardship of the Land

We believe a good neighbor leaves the land better than they found it. Our bees are little ambassadors of the North Carolina countryside, flying miles beyond our fences to pollinate local crops and keep our wildflowers vibrant. By protecting our colonies, we’re supporting the harvest of every farm in our community. We treat our soil and our hives with deep respect, ensuring that biodiversity isn't just a goal, it’s the way we live every day.

Honesty in Every Jar

On our farm, a handshake still means something. We don’t believe in additives, “extra” ingredients, or exaggerated claims. What you see on our label is exactly what the bees brought home to the hive. From the way we check our colonies to the moment we hand-seal your jar, we keep our process open and simple. If we change how we do things to better care for our bees, we’ll be the first to tell you. To us, transparency is just another word for being a good neighbor.

Local Heart

We’re not in a rush to be the biggest, we are focused on being the best for our community. By keeping our batches small and our growth intentional, we can pour our energy into mentoring the next generation of beekeepers and hobbyists. When you choose Secret Garden Bees, you’re doing more than buying honey; you’re helping a veteran-owned farm sustain the local ecosystem and pass down the art of beekeeping to those following in our footsteps.

Doing Right by the Girls

Good for the Neighbors, Great for the Land

We like to say that when our bees thrive, the whole county blooms. By keeping our hives healthy with quiet, hands-on care, we’re doing our part to make sure the gardens, orchards, and wild meadows of our community stay vibrant. Every jar you take home is a handshake with the land, helping us keep the pollinators strong for seasons to come.

Kind to the Earth, Gentle on the Hive

We’re big believers in the "Secret Garden Bees" way: taking only what the bees can spare and treating the earth with respect. Our honey is never over-processed, which keeps the local pollen and natural sweetness right where they belong. It’s our way of ensuring that the meadow stays vibrant and the honey stays honest.

The Linden Bloom Calendar: What’s in Your Jar?

On our 22-acre farm, the flavor of our honey is written by the flowers, and we let the bees work at their own pace. Rather than harvesting constantly, we gather honey only twice a year, allowing every jar to age, mellow, and soak up the sunshine of the seasons.

The Spring Harvest (Infused with Early Summer)

Collected as the first half of the year winds down, this honey is a bright, floral melody. It captures the earliest fruit blossoms and sweet clover of March, but because we wait, it also holds the golden essence of early June wildflowers. Light, crisp, and vibrant, it tastes like a North Carolina morning in every spoonful.

The Fall Harvest (Infused with Late Summer)

Our second harvest is deep, rich, and soulful. By waiting until the air turns crisp, this honey captures the late summer blooms alongside the earthy notes of autumn wildflowers and nut trees. Bold and “golden-hour” in character, it carries the warmth of the sun into cooler months.

Why Two Harvests Are Better Than One

By harvesting only in Spring and Fall, we give our colonies time to build their stores, stay healthy, and thrive. It also means your honey isn’t from a single flower it’s a “landscape in a jar.” Every spoonful is a blend of months of sunshine, hard work, and diverse forage from our Linden farmland.

Why the Source Matters

Most store-bought honey is heated, filtered, and blended to appear uniform year-round. We think that’s a shame! By keeping our harvests raw, seasonal, and minimally handled, we preserve the pollen, enzymes, and local character that make Linden honey so special.

When you buy a jar from us, you’re not just getting a sweetener you are getting a “taste of time” from our family farm, a direct connection to the North Carolina land, and the care of bees nurtured with patience and respect.
